Manta Ray in Sunlit Tanzanian Channel in beside a volcanic drop-off in Tanzania

Manta Ray in Sunlit Tanzanian Channel

by Alexander Vang

Pale sand fills the narrow channel beneath a massive manta ray gliding horizontally across the frame. Sunlight pierces the water in distinct shafts, illuminating suspended particles that glitter like fine dust in the current. The ray's broad, diamond-shaped pectoral fins span most of the view, their smooth grey skin catching the dappled light. Small bubbles drift upward from the sandy bottom, catching the illumination as they rise. To the right, a dark volcanic rock face creates a sharp contrast against the bright water. The light quality suggests late morning, filtering through surface disturbances to create shifting patterns on the ocean floor. The water remains clear, revealing the texture of the sand grains and the faint outline of the volcanic drop-off in the background.
