Snorkeler Drifting Over Stingray Noon Light in near Surry Hills, Sydney

Snorkeler Drifting Over Stingray Noon Light

by Alicia Sargent

Flat noon glare penetrates clear tropical water, casting a uniform brightness across the scene. A snorkeler in a dark wetsuit hovers horizontally, suspended in the mid-water column above a broad stingray. The ray glides just inches above a bed of stark white sand. Sharp, glittering caustics shift across the seabed, their patterns rippling with the surface movement. A soft plankton haze blurs the distant background, softening the edges of the water. Fine suspended particles catch the light in the space between the snorkeler and the ocean floor. The shadow of the diver falls directly onto the smooth, slate-grey skin of the ray below.
