Pale Surf Bands Over Zanzibar Volcanic Reef in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Zanzibar

Pale Surf Bands Over Zanzibar Volcanic Reef

by Josiah Fitzgerald

Pale bands of breaking surf curl over a dark volcanic reef near Zanzibar under a flat noon glare. Soft overcast light diffuses across the water, turning the surface into a sheet of milky white foam. Plankton haze hangs in the water, softening the distant reef structure and blurring the edges where the waves meet the stone. The water shifts from translucent turquoise near the surface to deep indigo in the shadows of the overhang. Shallow depth of field keeps the immediate wave crest sharp while the background dissolves into a luminous, submerged mystery. One strand of kelp drifts vertically in the foreground, caught in the current.
