Zanzibar Volcanic Reef Late Afternoon Caustics

by Bruce Calhoun

Sunlight fractures into shifting patterns of gold and white across the sandy ocean floor beneath a rugged volcanic reef overhang. Dark basaltic rock forms a jagged ceiling above, its porous texture against the smooth, pale sand below. Waves break in the distance along the outer edge of the barrier reef, sending faint ripples through the exceptionally clear water. Glittering caustic lines dance and stretch across the seabed, moving slowly as the surface ripples above. The water glows with a deep turquoise hue, revealing scattered coral fragments and fine sediment. A shadow from the overhang falls sharply against the rock face, ending at a single bright highlight on a smooth stone.
