Manta Ray Above Volcanic Reef Before Sunrise in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Cairns

Manta Ray Above Volcanic Reef Before Sunrise

by Derrick Flynn

Pale blue light falls through monsoon haze, softening the water column beside a jagged volcanic reef ledge. A massive manta ray glides horizontally, its dark dorsal skin against the lighter underside visible against the deep blue background. The creature's cephalic fins curve forward while broad pectoral fins extend outward. Suspended plankton particles float in the water, blurring the distance behind the ray. The rough texture of the overhang anchors the lower frame, its edges worn by the tide. The water grows murkier toward the horizon, merging the reef with the open ocean. Fine details of the ray's skin texture remain sharp against the diffused light.
