Manta Ray Gliding in Osaka Twilight Waters

by Duane Parks

Cool blue twilight washes over the water column near Osaka, suspending a massive manta ray in silent motion. Fine particles glitter throughout the water, catching the fading ambient light as the creature glides horizontally. The ray's broad pectoral fins stretch wide, their dark undersides against the pale, murky water. Shallow depth of field blurs the background into soft gradients of indigo and gray, isolating the animal against the suspended particulate matter. Tiny bubbles drift upward along the edges of the fins, while the water surface above remains a dark, featureless ceiling. A faint reflection of the ray's body ripples on the water's surface.
