Manatee Near Yaletown Volcanic Drop-off

by Malik McFarland

Soft, overcast light falls through the water, creating a diffuse glow that illuminates the smooth, slate-gray skin of a manatee. The animal fills the frame in a tight close-up, its massive, wrinkled flank dominating the foreground. Tiny plankton particles float in the water, forming a hazy veil that softens the view of the dark volcanic rock wall rising steeply behind the creature. The rock surface appears rough and textured, against the sleek, wet hide of the mammal. Shadows are gentle and lack hard edges, blending the subject into the murky green-blue depths. A cluster of barnacles rests on the lower edge of the stone, marking the boundary between the solid geology and the fluid life.
