Blue Whale Surfacing in British Columbia Waters

by Sydney Brady

Bright tropical sunlight pierces the exceptionally clear water, illuminating the massive, slate-gray flank of a blue whale as it breaks the surface. The creature's smooth skin glistens with droplets, catching the late morning light against the deep azure of the Pacific. Slow-moving ripples fan outward from the blowhole, where a faint spray of mist hangs in the air. The whale's eye, dark and round, sits just below the waterline, reflecting the distorted shapes of the waves above. Behind the animal, the water transitions from sunlit turquoise to a darker, shadowed depth, showing the sheer scale of the marine mammal against the open ocean. One bubble rests on the edge of the whale's blowhole.
