Manatee and Calf in Spanish Spring Waters

Hard coastal glare slices through exceptionally clear water, illuminating a gray manatee and its smaller calf drifting beside a dark volcanic drop-off. The surface ripples move slowly, fracturing the bright sunlight into shifting patterns of white and blue on the animals' wrinkled skin. Deep shadows pool along the rough, black volcanic rock face, against the luminous turquoise of the open water. The pair moves in unison, their flippers cutting gently through the fluid. Light reflects off the wet texture of the calf's back, highlighting the fine ridges of its skin against the stark, mineral dark of the seabed. One shadow from the volcanic ledge falls across the lower flank of the adult.
