Manatees Nuzzling in Oregon Volcanic Spring

by Tristan Frederick

Steel-blue evening light falls through exceptionally clear water, illuminating two manatees as they nuzzle in a warm spring channel beside a volcanic drop-off in Oregon. The subjects appear as dark silhouettes against the luminous background, their smooth, rounded bodies pressed together in a slow embrace. Autumn leaves drift on the surface, creating faint, slow-moving ripples that distort the light above. The volcanic rock forms a steep, dark wall to the side, against the fluid shapes of the marine mammals. Shadows deepen along the channel floor, while the water remains still enough to reflect the fading sky. One leaf rests on the surface near the edge of the current, marking the boundary between the warm spring and the cold channel.
