Walrus Diving Toward Mussel Bed Hokkaido in beside a volcanic drop-off in Hokkaido

Walrus Diving Toward Mussel Bed Hokkaido

by Tessa Rutledge

Orange low-angle light falls through the midsummer water, illuminating a massive walrus as it descends toward the rocky sea floor. The animal's thick, wrinkled hide glistens with suspended particles that glitter like dust in the copper-toned current. Beside the creature, a steep volcanic drop-off rises in shadow, its rough basalt texture against the smooth, clustered mussels clinging to the stones below. The walrus extends a tusk, probing the sediment where the shellfish bed lies dense and dark. Tiny bubbles rise from the surface above, breaking the orange glow into fractured reflections. at the edge is a single mussel shell half-buried in the silt, catching the last rays of the submerged sun.
