Humpback Whale and Calf Surfacing Near Oregon Volcanic Drop-off

Flat noon light strikes the water surface, creating a grid of glittering caustics that dance across the scene. A massive humpback whale and its smaller calf break the surface, their dark forms silhouetted against the bright glare. The water is clear yet filled with a soft plankton haze that blurs the distant volcanic drop-off. The whale's textured skin glistens with moisture where it meets the air, while the calf stays close, its smaller dorsal fin cutting through the ripples. Bubbles rise from their blowholes, scattering into the suspended particles. The sheer scale of the adult contrasts with the gentle drift of the calf, anchored by the rough, dark rock face visible beneath the shimmering water. A final ripple spreads outward from the calf's movement, distorting the light pattern on the surface.
