Whale Tail Dives Near Vancouver Volcanic Drop-off

by Kristy Washington

Soft, diffused light from a late afternoon sky falls through exceptionally clear water, illuminating a massive whale tail fluke as it arcs upward. The dark, textured skin of the fluke forms a sharp silhouette against the bright surface. Below, the ocean floor slopes steeply into a volcanic drop-off, its rough basaltic edges visible through the transparent depths. Slow-moving surface ripples distort the light, creating shifting patterns of silver and gray that fall across the submerged rock. The water remains calm, allowing the immense scale of the marine creature to dominate the view beside the city's coastal edge. A final shadow stretches across the basalt floor.
