Manatee Swimming Through Kelp Forest in Thailand in through a forest of kelp fronds in Thailand

Manatee Swimming Through Kelp Forest in Thailand

by Katrina Head

Sunlight fractures into shifting geometric patterns of gold and white across the back of a gray manatee gliding through translucent tropical water. The creature moves slowly past a dense forest of dark green kelp fronds that sway gently in the current. Tiny suspended plankton particles create a soft haze, muting the background into layers of pale turquoise blue. Sharp caustic lines dance across the animal's smooth skin and the surrounding seaweed. The water clarity reveals the texture of the kelp stems and the subtle ripples on the surface above. Light filters down from the midday sun, illuminating the dust-like plankton floating in the foreground while the distant fronds fade into a cool, luminous depth.
