Walrus on Ice Floe in British Columbia Winter

by Luke Rice

A massive walrus rests on a jagged sheet of sea ice, its thick, wrinkled hide against the sharp, fractured edges of the frozen surface. Below the waterline, dark polar depths reveal the animal's submerged bulk and massive tusks curving upward through the blue-grey fluid. Suspended particles glitter in the column of water, catching the flat glare of noon light that penetrates the surface. The ice floe floats in a sea of deep, cold water, creating a stark boundary between the solid white platform and the submerged mystery below. Fine ripples distort the view of the underwater scene, while the texture of the wet fur glistens under the bright, unyielding sky.
