Elephant Seals on California Shore at Twilight in beside a tidal inlet in California

Elephant Seals on California Shore at Twilight

by Peter Estrada

Steel-blue ambient light washes over a rocky tidal inlet where a colony of elephant seals rests along the sub-Antarctic shoreline. Late autumn chill hangs in the air, visible in the heavy, motionless bodies of the mammals sprawled across the wet, dark stones. A thick sea haze softens the horizon line, blurring the boundary between the churning ocean and the overcast sky. The seals' thick, grey hides glisten with moisture, contrasting against the rough, jagged textures of the basalt rocks. Their massive forms occupy the lower third of the view, while the muted water and fog fill the upper space. One seal lifts its head slightly, its dark eyes reflecting the fading light before it settles back against the cold stone.
