Manatee Drifts Through Kelp Forest at Sunset

by Jay Quintero

Golden hour light falls through the canopy of kelp fronds, illuminating the grey, textured skin of a manatee as it glides horizontally through the water. The creature moves slowly past the vertical, brownish-green stalks that sway gently in the current. Sunlight creates shifting patterns of brightness on the animal's back, against the deep shadows cast by the dense underwater forest. Tiny particles float in the exceptionally clear water, catching the fading rays. The surface ripples above distort the light into shimmering, moving patches. In the foreground, a single kelp blade blurs softly, framing the manatee against the darker, deeper water of the forest background.
