Elephant Seal Rookery on Indonesian Glacial Stream Beach

Soft overcast light spreads evenly across a wide beach where a massive colony of elephant seals rests on wet sand near a glacial stream. The seals, varying in dark brown and grey tones, huddle together in clusters that stretch toward the horizon. Cool season air hangs heavy with sea haze, blurring the distant water line into a pale grey wash. Behind the animals, the stream cuts a clear channel through the sand, its surface reflecting the muted sky. Each seal's thick, wrinkled skin glistens with moisture, and their heavy flippers press into the damp earth. In the foreground, a large male lies alert, his head raised slightly above the others, eyes scanning the misty edge where the ocean meets the land.
