Elephant Seals Resting at Portugal Reed Bed Edge

by Chase Wyatt

Soft overcast light washes the wide beach where a massive colony of elephant seals sprawls across the sand. Their dark, wet hides glisten with moisture, creating a textured carpet of grey and brown tones that stretches toward the water. Tall reeds fringe the left side of the frame, their pale green and dried stalks standing rigid against the rolling tide. Sea haze blurs the horizon line, softening the boundary between the grey Atlantic and the pale sky. The seals rest in clusters, some lying motionless while others shift their heavy bodies, their bulk dominating the foreground. A wet patch of sand near the front reflects the muted sky, at the base of the scene in the raw texture of the coast.
