Elephant Seals on Sub-Antarctic Shore at Golden Hour in along a game trail near Chinatown, Honolulu

Elephant Seals on Sub-Antarctic Shore at Golden Hour

by Terry Rocha

Orange low-angle light washes over a rugged sub-Antarctic coastline where massive elephant seals rest along a sandy beach. The animals, heavy with thick, wrinkled skin, lie clustered near a worn game trail that cuts through sparse coastal vegetation. Sea haze blurs the horizon line, softening the distant water where waves break against dark rocks. The turn of seasons leaves patches of dry grass and scattered driftwood along the shore. From behind the colony, the seals appear as dark silhouettes against the bright, glowing sand. A wet patch of sand near the foreground reflects the deep orange sky, mirroring the texture of the seals' wet hides.
