Elephant Seals Resting on Queensland Shore at Dawn in beside a tidal inlet in Queensland

Elephant Seals Resting on Queensland Shore at Dawn

by Andy Rubio

Misty diffused dawn light softens the colors of a wet season tidal inlet in Queensland. Massive elephant seals sprawl across the damp, dark sand, their wet hides reflecting the pale gray sky. A thick sea haze blankets the horizon, merging the water with the sky in a seamless gray expanse. The shoreline curves gently around the inlet, where shallow pools catch the faint morning glow. Individual seals rest in clusters, their bodies forming rounded mounds against the rippled wet sand. Fine droplets rest on the sand grains near the water's edge, while the heavy forms of the animals remain motionless against the quiet backdrop of the tidal flats. One seal's dark eye reflects the pale sky above.
