Elephants on Volcanic Sand Ridge in Mist in on a wind-scoured ridge in British Columbia

Elephants on Volcanic Sand Ridge in Mist

by Nathaniel Giles

Thick mist hangs low over a wind-scoured ridge where dappled light falls through overhead leaves. A tight close-up shows the rough, gray skin of an elephant herd moving across dark volcanic sand. Their massive legs displace the coarse grains, leaving deep, curved tracks that fade into the damp earth behind them. Pale skin contrasts with the black soil, highlighted by shafts of afternoon sun breaking through the canopy. The moisture in the air softens the edges of the foreground foliage. The wet sand holds the imprint of their weight, creating a sharp, dark line against the lighter mist. One foot presses into the ground, displacing a small cloud of dark dust.
