Elephants Cross Volcanic Sand Through Mist in at the edge of a reed bed near Manali

Elephants Cross Volcanic Sand Through Mist

by Gary Robertson

Thick white mist rests on the ground, softening the harsh noon glare that bleaches the volcanic sand beneath a herd of elephants. The massive gray forms move in a diagonal line, their wrinkled skin textured with fine dust and patches of dried mud. Distant birds scatter in a sudden burst of white wings against the pale sky, kicked up by the side wind that ripples the tall reeds at the meadow's edge. A thick branch in the foreground frames the right side of the view, its rough bark against the smooth, hazy ground. The light remains sharp and direct, illuminating the dust particles swirling around the elephants' heavy feet. The last elephant steps into the shadow of a low stone wall.
