Elephants crossing volcanic sand near Cusco inlet

Dappled sunlight falls through autumn leaves, casting shifting patches of gold and shadow across the wrinkled gray skin of an elephant herd. The massive animals move slowly over coarse, dark volcanic sand beside a tidal inlet near Plaza de Armas in Cusco. Low-hanging clouds obscure the pale sky above, where distant birds scatter in sudden flight. The perspective sits low to the ground, showing the towering scale of the herd against the small, scattered foliage. Dust rises slightly from the shifting sand under their heavy feet. A shadow from a nearby tree falls across the front legs of the lead elephant.
