Seal Colony Basking on Rocky Shore at Dawn in along a seagrass channel near the coast in British Columbia

Seal Colony Basking on Rocky Shore at Dawn

by Caroline Dillon

Cool gray light washes over a cluster of harbor seals resting on dark, wet basalt rocks along a British Columbia shoreline. The animals lie in tight groups, their spotted coats glistening with moisture against the stone. Beyond the shore, a channel of seagrass sways gently in the water, where suspended particles glitter like scattered diamonds in the low sun. The horizon glows with a pale haze, hinting at the sun's approach while the foreground remains in deep shadow. Individual droplets rest on the seals' whiskers and fur, catching the faint light. The water surface reflects the soft sky, creating a seamless transition between the sea and the air above the rocky outcrop.
