Elephant Seals on Sub-Antarctic Shore Near Havana

by Simone Bravo

Wet sand glistens under a low, wrapping horizon light as a massive colony of elephant seals sprawls across the sub-Antarctic shoreline. Rain streaks the air, catching the dimming gold of the setting sun and turning the dark fur of the resting males into slick, glistening surfaces. The wet season atmosphere hangs heavy, with puddles reflecting the bruised purple sky. In the distance, the faint outline of a coastal structure blends with the natural dunes, at the base of the scene in a specific, albeit unusual, geographic context. The seals lie in tight clusters, their massive bodies creating a landscape of muscle and breath against the rhythmic wash of the tide. One wet rock near the foreground edge anchors the composition, its rough texture against the smooth, rain-slicked sand.
