Silhouetted African Wild Dogs at Blue Hour Waterhole

by Clifford Barry

Deep indigo twilight washes the dry savanna floor where a pack of African wild dogs rests in tight formation. Their mottled coats dissolve into dark silhouettes against the fading violet sky, backs hunched low as wind ripples through their short fur. The waterhole reflects a sliver of cooling light, its surface disturbed only by the rhythmic movement of grass blades bending in the breeze. Dust hangs suspended in the thin air, catching the last residual glow above the horizon. Each animal stands or lies with heads tucked or alert, their spotted ears distinct against the darkening backdrop. The low angle emphasizes their proximity to the earth, at the base of the pack in the quiet stillness of the dry season evening.
