Tanzanian Sea Stack at Dawn in in Tanzania

Tanzanian Sea Stack at Dawn

by Bobby Pate

The first rays of sunrise cut through heavy monsoon clouds, illuminating a towering basalt sea stack rising from the Indian Ocean. Dark volcanic rock dominates the center, its rough, columnar texture standing stark against the pale, breaking sky. Flocks of seabirds cluster on narrow ledges and jagged peaks, appearing as tiny white specks against the black stone. Below, the ocean churns with white foam where waves crash against the base of the stack. The wide panoramic view shows the vast expanse of water stretching to the horizon, showing the isolation of the rock formation. One bird takes flight from the upper ledge, wings spread against the brightening sky.
