Elephants on Volcanic Sand in Orange Mist in at the edge of a reed bed in Chile

Elephants on Volcanic Sand in Orange Mist

by Suzanne Bradford

Thick gray mist settles low over dark volcanic sand while orange light from the setting sun spills across the ground. Three elephants move in a tight line, their massive gray hides textured with deep wrinkles and dried mud. Fine ash dusts their skin, catching the low-angle glow. Behind the trailing elephant, deep tracks press into the loose black sand, marking their path along the reed bed edge. The air hangs heavy with suspended moisture, softening the edges of reeds that rise like pale green spikes from the mist. One footprint in the foreground holds a small pool of reflected orange light.
