Elephant Herd Crossing Volcanic Sand at Sunset

by Kendra Ibarra

Warm golden light spills across rough volcanic sand as a herd of elephants moves in a low-angle view. The coarse, dark grains contrast with the massive, wrinkled gray hides of the animals. Their trunks hang heavy, sensing the ground beneath their feet. Distant birds scatter into the air, their wings blurring against a pale sky filled with dramatic, heavy clouds. The sun drops toward the horizon, casting long, sharp shadows that stretch across the uneven terrain. The elephants pause, ears flared, heads turning toward the horizon. One shadow of a leading matriarch falls across a pile of loose, black ash.
