Elephant Herd Crossing River at Sunset in beside a tidal inlet in Fiji

Elephant Herd Crossing River at Sunset

by Julia Friedman

Rich amber light floods the tidal inlet, illuminating dust motes that hang heavy in the humid air after recent rain. A herd of elephants moves through shallow water, their massive grey bodies partially submerged and glistening with moisture. Low-angle perspective emphasizes the towering scale of the lead elephant, whose wrinkled skin catches the golden glow while ripples spread outward from its trunk. The water reflects the warm sky, creating a mirror surface that distorts the animals' legs. Mud rests on the lower flanks, against the wet sheen of their hides. Dark silhouettes of distant vegetation line the riverbank, framing the crossing. at the edge is the sharp, dark outline of a trailing calf against the bright, shimmering water surface.
