Walrus on Ice Floe in Northwest Territories Winter

by Samantha McLeod

Bright open daylight floods the ice-scoured channel in the Northwest Territories, illuminating a massive walrus hauled out on a jagged floe. The animal's thick, wrinkled hide ranges from muddy brown to pale tan, against the stark white snow and translucent blue ice beneath. Two long, curved tusks protrude downward, catching the sun with a polished, ivory sheen. Suspended particles glitter within the dark water column below the ice edge, creating a field of suspended dust-like specks that catch the light. The sky is a pale, washed-out white, blending softly with the horizon where ice meets distant water. A sharp shadow falls across the walrus's flank, defining the curve of its body against the rough, textured ice surface.
