Narwhal Breaching Arctic Ice Near Iqaluit

by Alex Rivas

Steel-blue ambient light washes over the frozen edge of the Arctic sea as a narwhal breaks the surface. The animal's pale, spotted flank emerges from exceptionally clear water, creating slow-moving ripples that distort the reflection of the sky. Behind the whale, thick sheets of ice float in layered depth, their edges sharp against the dark water. In the far distance, the faint glow of city lights from Iqaluit begins to pierce the twilight, casting a soft, cool luminescence over the horizon. The narwhal's tusk cuts a straight, white line through the blue, while the water's surface remains calm except for the gentle disturbance caused by the creature's movement. The ice texture appears rough and granular, against the smooth, liquid skin of the whale.
