Narwhals Tusk Crossing Beneath Arctic Ice in above a rock shelf sealed under winter ice near Nuuk

Narwhals Tusk Crossing Beneath Arctic Ice

by Gina Callahan

Indigo twilight falls through the thick winter ice ceiling, casting a cool glow over two narwhals suspended in the clear water near Nuuk. Their long, spiraled tusks intersect in a gentle lock above a rugged rock shelf that anchors the seabed. Deep shadows obscure the animals' bodies while a sharp rim light traces the curve of their spines and the sharp edges of their tusks. The water remains exceptionally still, disturbed only by faint, slow-moving ripples on the ice surface above. Layers of depth stretch backward into the dark distance, where the rock shelf fades into the gloom. A faint reflection of the tusks shimmers on the smooth, mineral-rich water below.
