Narwhal Pod Under Arctic Ice Channel in along an ice-scoured channel near Nuuk

Narwhal Pod Under Arctic Ice Channel

by Adeline Christensen

Pale grey skin of three narwhals glides through turquoise water within a narrow channel carved by ice near Nuuk. Sunlight penetrates the surface from above, illuminating the long, spiraled tusks that curve upward like pale spears. A fine suspension of plankton creates a hazy veil around the animals, softening the background and reducing visibility beyond a few meters. The water holds a cool, luminous quality, against the smooth, wet texture of the whales' bodies. Shadows fall gently across the flanks, defining the curvature of their forms against the milky blue backdrop. One bubble rests on the tip of the nearest tusk before drifting upward.
