Beluga Pod Swimming Arctic Ice Shallows in through dark polar water below fractured ice in Alaska

Beluga Pod Swimming Arctic Ice Shallows

by Noelle Adkins

Turquoise Arctic water fills the frame beneath a fractured ceiling of white and blue ice. A pod of beluga whales glides through the shallows, their pale bodies against the deep blue depths below. Fine suspended particles glitter in the clear dry light filtering through the ice, creating a field of suspended brightness. The whales move in a loose formation, their smooth skin reflecting the ambient glow. Shadows from the ice above stretch across the water column, marking the late afternoon sun's angle. The scene remains still, with only the gentle undulation of the whales disturbing the surface. A cluster of small bubbles rises from the nearest whale's blowhole, catching the light before fading into the dark water below.
