Narwhal Surfacing Through Arctic Ice Channel in along an ice-scoured channel near Nuuk

Narwhal Surfacing Through Arctic Ice Channel

by Phoebe Page

Soft, diffused light from a post-rain noon sky reflects off the wet, dark surface of the water. A narwhal breaks the ice-scoured channel near Nuuk, its grey skin glistening with droplets. The creature's long tusk pierces the water's surface, surrounded by a curtain of suspended particles that glitter like dust in the water column. Thick sheets of ice line the channel edges, their surfaces rough and scoured by wind. From behind the subject, the narwhal's powerful back arches slightly as it draws breath. The water remains still, holding the otherworldly blue hue of the deep summer light. One bubble escapes the tusk's side, drifting upward through the suspended particles.
