Narwhal Surfacing Through Arctic Ice in beneath a pressure-ridged sheet of sea ice near Tromsø

Narwhal Surfacing Through Arctic Ice

by Felicia Meza

Dappled light falls through a pressure-ridged sheet of sea ice, illuminating the pale, spiraled tusk of a narwhal as it breaks the surface near Tromsø. The water holds suspended particles that glitter like dust in the midnight sun's flat glare. Ridges of frozen water press down from above, creating a jagged ceiling of translucent blue and white. The whale's smooth gray skin contrasts with the rough, frost-covered ice edges. Tiny bubbles rest on the creature's blowhole as it exhales into the cold air. One ray of light catches the curve of the tusk, revealing its spiral texture against the dark water below.
