Beluga Whales in Turquoise Arctic Shallows in above a rock shelf sealed under winter ice in Sweden

Beluga Whales in Turquoise Arctic Shallows

by Judith Kelley

Turquoise water fills the frame where a pod of beluga whales moves beneath a thin layer of ice. Bright midmorning light falls through the frozen ceiling, casting dappled patterns across their pale, smooth skin. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing the rocky shelf below where the whales glide with slow, deliberate ripples disturbing the surface. Their white bodies contrast against the deep blue-green hues of the shallow Arctic sea. Shadows from the ice ceiling stretch across the water, creating a mosaic of light and dark on the whales' backs. One whale turns its head, revealing a dark eye and the gentle curve of its melon against the luminous, submerged mystery of the ice-sealed shallows.
