Narwhal Crossing Tusks Beneath Canadian Ice in in Canada

Narwhal Crossing Tusks Beneath Canadian Ice

by Dorothy Payne

Pale gray narwhals glide beneath a thick sheet of Arctic ice, their long spiraled tusks intersecting in a delicate X-shape. Distant orange light from a town glows faintly through the water, casting a soft, warm hue against the deep blue surroundings. Plankton particles float in the haze, softening the background and creating a layered depth. The ice above shows a rough, textured surface with varying shades of white and gray, while the water's clarity reveals the smooth skin of the whales. Their tusks, slightly curved and cream-colored, catch the ambient light, highlighting the gentle curves against the dark water. A small bubble rises near the ice, catching the distant glow before fading into the blue.
