Narwhals Crossing Tusks Beneath Canadian Sea Ice in beneath a pressure-ridged sheet of sea ice in Canada

Narwhals Crossing Tusks Beneath Canadian Sea Ice

by Chase Palacios

Emerald-green water fills the frame beneath a thick, pressure-ridged sheet of sea ice that stretches across the entire upper view. Two narwhals float side by side in this suspended environment, their spiraled white tusks locked together in a gentle X-shape. The water clarity is exceptional, revealing the fine texture of the rough ice ceiling above. Pale blue light falls through the surface ripples, casting shifting patterns of brightness across the whales' grey skin and the jagged ice formations. The scene remains motionless, with the animals drifting weightlessly in the endless summer light. A faint shadow from the ice ridge falls across the lower right corner of the water column.
