Narwhal Pod Surfacing Through Arctic Ice Crack in through dark polar water below fractured ice near Tromsø

Narwhal Pod Surfacing Through Arctic Ice Crack

by Levi Boyle

Flat noon light diffuses across a fractured sheet of sea ice near Tromsø, where a narrow crack reveals the dark water below. Three narwhals break the surface, their pale grey bodies contrasting against the deep blue-black liquid. A thick haze of plankton softens the distance, blurring the edges of the ice floes. The water ripples gently around their spiraled tusks, catching the pale overhead glow. Ice chunks float in the immediate foreground, their jagged edges sharp against the soft, milky water. The surface tension breaks in small, rhythmic arcs as the animals exhale. one drop of water slides down the side of a nearby ice shard, refracting the flat white light before vanishing into the churning dark.
