Predawn Narwhals Crossing Tusks Beneath Ice in along an ice-scoured channel near Tromsø

Predawn Narwhals Crossing Tusks Beneath Ice

by Valeria Grant

A narrow beam of white light cuts through the deep blue water, illuminating two narwhals suspended beneath a thick sheet of sea ice. Their long, spiraled tusks meet in a gentle cross near the center of the frame. The water holds a soft haze of plankton that blurs the background into indistinct shadows. Above, the ice surface shows rough textures and cracks from the early spring thaw. The lighthouse sweep creates a sharp contrast between the illuminated subjects and the surrounding predawn darkness. Fine details of the whales' gray skin and the spiral ridges on their tusks stand out clearly against the milky water. A faint reflection of the light beam glimmers on the underside of the ice above.
