Narwhal Pod Surfacing Through Arctic Ice in along an ice-scoured channel in Greenland

Narwhal Pod Surfacing Through Arctic Ice

by Brenda Robertson

Dark, steel-gray water fills a narrow channel carved through endless summer ice in Greenland. Three narwhals break the surface, their smooth, mottled bodies contrasting against the white, scoured edges of the frozen sheet. A pale rim light traces the curve of their backs and the tip of a spiraled tusk, separating them from the deep shadow of the water below. Suspended particles glitter in the water column, catching the faint ambient glow before dawn. The ice surface is rough and textured with ridges, while the water remains calm and glassy. One tusk pierces the still air, glistening with moisture.
