Narwhal Pod Surfacing Through Arctic Ice at Midnight in above a rock shelf sealed under winter ice in Norway

Narwhal Pod Surfacing Through Arctic Ice at Midnight

by Finn Walter

Soft, diffused light from the low-hanging midnight sun illuminates a narrow fracture in the thick winter ice of a Norwegian rock shelf. Through exceptionally clear water, the dark silhouettes of three narwhals emerge, their long tusks piercing the air above the surface. Slow-moving ripples distort the reflection of the pale sky against the deep blue water. The ice edge is rough and textured, against the smooth, fluid bodies of the whales. Fine details of the whales' skin texture are visible where they break the surface tension. The water clarity reveals the submerged curve of a whale's back just beneath the opening. One ripple spreads outward from the point where the largest narwhal exhales.
