Walrus on Ice Floe Midnight Sun Northwest Territories

Reflected light from the water washes over a massive walrus hauled out on a jagged ice floe in the Northwest Territories. The animal's wrinkled, grey-brown skin contrasts with the pale, blue-tinged ice beneath it. Long, curved tusks protrude from the upper lip, catching the soft, continuous glow of the midnight sun. A thick haze of plankton softens the background, blurring the rock shelf sealed under the winter ice into a distant, indistinct wall of pale grey. The shallow depth of field keeps the walrus in sharp focus while the surrounding water and ice edges dissolve into a cool, blue stillness. The texture of the ice shows deep cracks and smooth, water-worn patches.
