Manta Ray Somersaulting Over Seagrass
by Gail Mosley
Soft, diffused midday light falls through the water, illuminating a massive manta ray as it performs a somersault above a dense seagrass meadow. The ray's broad, diamond-shaped wings catch the pale blue-green hues of the surface, while its white underbelly glows against the darker vegetation below. A thick cloud of plankton hangs in the water, creating a hazy, suspended texture that softens the distance and mutes the background details. The seagrass blades sway gently in the current, their long green fronds forming a textured carpet beneath the swimming giant. Shadows remain faint and diffuse, lacking sharp edges due to the overcast conditions above. The ray's movement creates a subtle ripple in the water column, separating the clear foreground from the milky plankton haze that stretches toward the unseen horizon. One dark spot on the ray's dorsal fin anchors the eye against the soft, shifting water.
