Manatee Calf and Mother South African Kelp Shelf in along a kelp-fringed shelf in South Africa

Manatee Calf and Mother South African Kelp Shelf

by Timothy Bush

Hard midday sunlight penetrates the water, illuminating a mother manatee and her calf gliding along a kelp-fringed shelf. The coastal glare creates bright highlights on the wet, grey-brown skin of the adults while casting deep shadows beneath their bellies. Thick strands of kelp sway gently in the current, their dark green fronds against the pale, plankton-hazed water in the distance. The calf stays close to the mother, its smaller flippers trailing in the soft sediment. Layers of depth recede as the water clarity fades into a milky blue haze, blurring the far edges of the shelf. A cluster of kelp fronds rests against the rocky bottom in the foreground, anchoring the composition.
