Manatees Nuzzling in Dalmatian Kelp Shelf in along a kelp-fringed shelf in Dalmatia

Manatees Nuzzling in Dalmatian Kelp Shelf

by Pamela O'Donnell

Sunlight penetrates the clear water, illuminating two massive gray manatees as they press their rounded heads together in a slow, affectionate nuzzle. Their skin appears smooth and wrinkled, marked by small barnacles and algae patches typical of late autumn. Around them, long strands of dark green kelp sway gently along a rocky shelf, their fronds catching the bright midday light. Tiny suspended particles glitter like diamonds in the water column, creating a field of scattered sparks that drift past the animals. The manatees' eyes are half-closed, and their flippers rest softly against the rocky bottom. The water clarity reveals the texture of the kelp fronds and the subtle ripples moving across the manatees' broad backs. One strand of kelp brushes the tip of one manatee's snout.
