Right Whale Mother Nursing Calf Sicily
Green underwater light falls through the water column, fractured by shimmering surface ripples that dance across the backs of a massive right whale mother and her calf. Fine suspended particles glitter in the beam, creating a suspended mist around the dark, textured skin of the marine mammals. The mother's broad body curves protectively around the smaller calf, which presses close to nurse. Late afternoon sunlight penetrates the Mediterranean depths near Sicily, casting shifting patches of brightness on the whales' rough surfaces. The wide panoramic view shows the vastness of the water against the intimate scale of the pair. A final shaft of light illuminates the edge of the calf's flipper against the deep blue-green void.
